幸, A Love Language

miyuki cookbook zine

about

幸: A Love Language: Miyuki Cookbook Zine is a Miyuki-centric, gen zine that focuses on his passion and skills for cooking. We are planning to create recipes by following him through the four stages of his life: young, high school, university and finally, him in the pro-leagues. While we are hoping for recipes that are nutritional and healthy, we are also looking for recipes that bring back nostalgia from his younger days, such as when he had to learn how to cook for himself, learning recipes through television, etc.The overall theme to this zine is food as Miyuki’s love language, and we are aiming for heartwarming recipes, stories behind dishes that will touch the hearts of readers. We want each dish to be built and made better based on the preferences of his peers (e.g: Masuko and his pudding). Through this zine, we hope to portray Miyuki in a manner where he is conscientious and looks out for what his peers like and dislike, noting all of it down before he ever cooks for them. And of course there will be instances of smug Miyuki, secretly hiding natto in Sawamura’s fried rice, etc. A sprinkle of comedy is to be expected too, in which Miyuki forces his teammates to be his guinea pigs, accidents in the kitchen, and shenanigans from the Seido team + guests from other schools as well!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How did the name of the zine come about?

We took the kanji (幸) from Miyuki’s name, and to match with our vision and theme for this zine to be full of love and laughter. 幸 means happiness, and for this zine, we envision Miyuki to be caring for his peers by cooking for them / teaching them how to cook / coming up with personalised recipes for them— and that he’s always secretly glad to do so! We aim for a very blissful and lighthearted kind of vibe that will also tie in with the main theme: food as a love language!

What characters will be appearing?

Primarily, there will be Miyuki as the main focus, but there will also be other appearances which are inclusive (but not limited to) of Miyuki Toku, the Seido Team and Inashiro.

What do artists have to draw?

**Artists will have a chance to do the cover page, spreads, comics and spot illustrations. Artists who are not doing cover, spreads, and comics are expected to draw one (1) full illustration in collaboration with a chef, and will be assigned up to two (2) spot illustrations.
**

How many contributors will there be?

**23 Artists, 4 Writers, 6 Merch Artists, 4 Chefs. Numbers are inclusive of guests.
**

What is the workload for merch artists?

**Merch artists are expected to do a minimum of two merch offerings, maximum three.
**

What are the zine specs?

**Perfect bound, 8.5 x 8.5 inches, possibly hardcover
**

Will you be accepting intern mods?

We will be accepting one intern! We are looking for someone who is organized, meticulous, and loves Miyuki! The intern’s responsibilities will be highly dependent on what they would like to learn more of; for example, the intern can choose to help the graphics & formatting mod by creating graphics if they would like to learn more about illustration and formatting or the intern could shadow the production mod by helping with spreadsheets and sending out emails to suppliers. The goal is to absorb someone who wants to be mentored by any of the mods—in return, we’d like to ask for help with proofreading and minor tasks that will help the intern learn more about modding zines!

Is the zine for-profit or for charity?

It is for-profit! Proceeds will go to production and manufacturing first, and when we hit breakeven, all contributors and mods will automatically receive a copy of the zine. If there’s any leftovers afterwards, it will be distributed within contributors and mods equally via Paypal.

What is the rating of the zine?

It is SFW, a G rated zine.

What kind of recipes are you looking for?

**We are looking for something that is nutritional, seeing as to how canon Miyuki is health conscious (picking the crust off his tonkatsu). Ideally, there will also be protein rich meals for bulking up. We are also looking at baked goods, so pastry recipes are welcome— as long as they’re not too sweet and calorific!
**

What are the expectations for chefs?

**Chefs are to come up with four (4) recipes, according to the timeline they are assigned to: Young, High School, College, Pro. Original recipes are expected, but there should also be food that Miyuki canonically knows how to cook, like omelette and fried rice. We also accept recipes that better the foods his peers love (e.g: Masuko and his pudding). Vegetarian and vegan recipes are absolutely welcome too! Recipes are expected to be both in metric and imperial measurements. Submissions of photographs of your foods are also required, and it has to be clear with high resolution, with a neat and aesthetically pleasing presentation.
**

How many guests are you looking for?

**We are seeking to look for 6 guest artists (inclusive of merch artists), and 1 guest writer.
**

What do writers have to write?

**They are expected to write one (1) fic on either of the four themes, young, high school, college, pro. The word count limit will be 2K. Fics will be gen, and will be about how the different stages of his life has developed his relationship with food and inspiring the recipes he has come up with. Writers will also have to be willing to discuss and work their content with the mods and chefs, in order to ensure cohesiveness. (last updated: 6/9/21)
**

Is there an age requirement?

**Contributors have to be 16 and above at the time of shipping (September 2022), but they will need to use a guardian's PayPal in order to receive their share of profits from the zine, if any.

ART SUPPORT

Hello, I’m Meri! I got into Daiya no Ace last year and it immediately went up into one of my favorite series of all-time! This is my first time to be a mod for a zine, but I’m an artist contributor for a total of 4 zines as well as a graphics and artist support mod for Kousawa Exchange. I’ve also worked on art and design direction for several university projects and events in the past.
